    Marlins Ghosted By Senga

The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 5-1 on April 2, 2023. Kodai Senga made his major league debut and struck out eight batters in five innings. He allowed just one run on three hits. The Mets scored all five of their runs in the first inning. Francisco Lindor hit a two-run home run, and Pete Alonso and Mark Canha each had RBI singles. The Marlins’ only run came on a solo home run by Jorge Soler in the bottom of the first inning. The Mets improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Marlins fell to 1-1.

Senga, a 25-year-old right-hander, made his major league debut in impressive fashion, striking out the side in the first inning and retiring the first 12 batters he faced. He allowed a leadoff single to Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the fourth inning, but then struck out the next two batters. Soler homered to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning, but Senga retired the next three batters to end his outing.

The Mets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Lindor hit a two-run home run off Marlins starter Trevor Rogers, and Alonso and Canha each had RBI singles. The Mets added an insurance run in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by Dominic Smith.

The Marlins will look to turn things around when they host the Minnesota Twins on Monday night.
