    Marlins Fall Short on Opening Day

    The New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 5-3 on Thursday, March 30, 2023. Brandon Nimmo‘s two-run double in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and sent the Mets to victory.

    Max Scherzer pitched six solid innings for the Mets, allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked two. Drew Smith, Brooks Raley, and David Robertson combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief. Robertson earned the save.

    Sandy Alcantara started for the Marlins and allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

    The Mets took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single by Pete Alonso. The Marlins tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer by Garrett Cooper.

    The Mets took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on a solo homer by Francisco Lindor. The Marlins tied the game again in the fifth inning on a solo homer by Jesus Sanchez.

    Nimmo’s double in the seventh inning put the Mets ahead for good. The Mets added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Dominic Smith.

    The Mets improved to 1-0 on the season. The Marlins fell to 0-1.
