The Miami Dolphins have hired Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator and they paid a large sum to do so.
According to Sports Illustrated, the Dolphins will be making Fangio the highest paid defensive coordinator in the NFL. The deal is for three years, with an option for a fourth season. That option belongs to Miami, giving them a solid contract to deal with here.
Fangio was the guy that Miami targeted right from the start, and was seen as the missing piece for a team that is on the cusp of being a championship contender. Miami’s offense is solid when healthy, but the defense was a big problem in 2022. Fangio should be a tremendous difference maker, with a ton of experience in the league. While Fangio’s work as a head coach can be dismissed, there is no overlooking his success as a DC. Fangio has previously been in charge of the defense for the Bears, 49ers, Texans and Colts.
Fangio is 64 years old and has been working in the NFL since 1986. Prior to that NFL stint, Fangio had worked in the high school ranks, along with college and the USFL. All told, Fangio has nearly 45 years of coaching experience and should be a great asset for head coach Mike McDaniel to lean on. McDaniel who is 39 wasn’t even born yet, when Fangio’s coaching career began.
The off-season is just getting started for Miami and it figures to be a busy one as the team looks to return to the playoffs next season.
